Proving that truth is often greater than fiction, the handsome production of Seabiscuit offers a healthy alternative to Hollywood's staple diet of mayhem. With superior production values at his disposal, writer-director Gary Ross (Pleasantville) is a bit too reverent toward Laura Hillenbrand's captivating bestseller, unnecessarily using archival material--and David McCullough's familiar PBS-styled narration--to pay Ken Burns-like tribute to Hillenbrand's acclaimed history of Seabiscuit, the knobby-kneed thoroughbred who "came from behind" in the late 1930s to win the hearts of Depression-weary Americans. That caveat aside, Ross's adaptation retains much of the horse-and-human heroism that Hillenbrand so effectively conveyed; this is a classically styled "legend" movie like The Natural, which was also heightened by a lushly sentimental Randy Newman score. Led by Tobey Maguire as Seabiscuit's hard-luck jockey, the film's first-rate cast is uniformly excellent, including William H. Rube-Goldberg universe of elaborate contraptions and gleaming metallic surfaces. Rodney (voiced with a hint-of-Scottish lilt by Ewan McGregor) is a young inventor who sets off for Robot City to work for Big Weld (Mel Brooks), the supreme inventor of the mechanical world. But upon his arrival, Rodney discovers that Big Weld has disappeared, and the slick, shiny Ratchet (Greg Kinnear, As Good As It Gets) is phasing out the spare parts that lumpen robots need to function and replacing them with "upgrades"--expensive and glistening new exoskeletons. Unfortunately, from this suitable beginning, the story degenerates into a series of action sequences that make very little sense, though some are kinetic and fun (though others are only there to serve the inevitable Robots video game). Most kids will enjoy the sheer visual pleasure of the movie, but compared to the narrative richness of Pixar movies like The Incredibles and Toy Story, that pleasure is pretty short-lived. Also featuring the voices of Robin Williams, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Amanda Bynes, Jennifer Coolidge, and many, many more. --Bret Fetzer

DVD Features

Jennifer Coolidge returns as the voice of Aunt Fanny in a mildly amusing new short, "Aunt Fanny's Tour of Booty," which allows her to again be the butt of the joke. Fans of the characters will enjoy both a 17-minute discussion of the robots' creation as well as profiles of 11 of the bots, including early, almost unrecognizable conceptual sketches and brief interviews with the voice cast. The original short is fairly dull, and of the three deleted scenes, the most finished is an extended version of Rodney's initial meeting with Tim at the gate. One other is in sketch form only but does preserve another performance by Robin Williams. The kids' games are pretty good. There's a dancing robot that will perform eight routines on command or in random order. A memory game has a bit of replay value, and the build-a-bot segment takes some thought and investigation. The Xbox demo is a nifty little diversion that transforms one element (the transport-pod race) of the full-length, single-player Xbox game into a frenetic one- to four-player free-for-all.

In their commentary track, director Chris Wedge and producer-inspiration William Joyce have to remind each other to stop patting themselves on the back, but it is interesting to hear them talk about old games such as Mousetrap that played a part in developing the film. (Wedge's frequent references to a possible "director's cut" might not seem like a joke to DVD buyers who have gotten tired of DVD rereleases.) The commentary track by the Blue Sky technical team might be better, offering insights into the characters and the creation of the film without lapsing into too much techie-speak. --David Horiuchi

Starsky & Hutch (Widescreen Edition) details:

Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson--dark, wiry, and tense meets blond, lanky, and loose--make a solid comic team (and previously appeared together in Zoolander), but the funniest man in Starsky and Hutch is Vince Vaughn. Vaughn dives into his role as a sleazy drug dealer (who nonetheless buys a pony for his daughter's bat mitzvah) with the offhand zest that he brings to almost every role (from Swingers to Old School) and effortlessly steals every scene he's in. Vaughn has concocted a new and undetectable kind of cocaine, and only two cops who aren't afraid to break the rules--our titular pair--can catch him. But the plot isn't the point; mocking-yet-loving jabs at the '70s, including the homoerotic overtones of Starsky and Hutch's partnership, are what this movie is about. The satire is surprisingly mild but entertaining nonetheless, particularly when Vaughn or Snoop Dogg (as informant Huggy Bear) hold the screen. --Bret Fetzer

Rambo Box Set (First Blood / Rambo: First Blood Part II / Rambo III ) [Blu-ray] Review


This review is based wholly on the Blu-Ray box set. There are many Rambo box sets out there and rest assured there will be more. I chose to upgrade to this set because the collection with all 4 movies does not contain the new Rambo Extended Cut. If you don't know Rambo's story than you are either A. a tree hugging hippie, B. a monk, or C. born within the last 10 years!

First Blood is a 5 star movie based on the book by David Morrell. It tells the story of a Vietnam vet looking to find a place in America. Unable to hold a steady job and tormented by POW nightmares, Rambo moves from place to place. When he finds himself in a nowheresville USA, he quickly catches the eye of the town sheriff. Told that his kind isn't wanted there, he is taken out of the town limits and told not to return. Rambo defies the order and is arrested. Rambo is then beaten by the local police while in holding which triggers his instincts to fight back. What happens next is the start of a film icon!

First Blood Part II is a 5 star action movie! I would say this may be the first Blockbuster Action Film ever made. Now in prison for his town romp, Col. Trautman returns to give Rambo an out. A mission to go back to 'Nam and confirm the possible existence of POW's. Rambo accepts and utters these words "Do we get to win this time?" Ordered only to take pictures, Rambo defies orders (see a trend here) and saves one of them instead. The backstabbing politician running the whole thing freaks and aborts the mission leaving Rambo stranded and now a POW. Alas, held by his captors and tortured by the Russians running the camp, Rambo endures more punishment that only fuels his rage. What happens next is probably the greatest one man army display ever filmed! From the jungles scenes to the finale, you will feel the rush and cheer!

First Blood Part III is a 3.5 star action movie. This time Rambo is living a peaceful life in Thailand. Col. Trautman finds him and asks for his help on a mission he is leading in Afghanistan. Rambo claims his war is over but that all changes once his only ally becomes a POW. Rambo asks to go in and save his friend. What happens next is he finds himself drawn to the Afghan freedom fighters and decides to pick up their plight against the Russians. This is by far the weakest of all the films but still ranks better than most action movies today.

BLU RAY THOUGHTS: I wasn't expecting much but all 3 films looked amazing. No this isn't like Avatar amazing but these films are over 20 years old and they looked brand new. Sound was excellent as well. SPECIAL FEATURES: Everything from the previous releases are here. Including the alt ending where Rambo kills himself as in the book. My mother brought me to see the original movie when I was a kid! My God, I loved this movie. When it would come on HBO, I would watch it again and again. When they remade this movie, I gave it a chance, but itproved to be pure garbage. Why remake a movie that was already perfect to begin with? I am only giving this DVD a 5 star because it has the original one on it. If I had to rate the newer, updated version, I would give it a flat out 0. That's the truth! At 4.5/5 stars, Casino Royale was a thrilling and enjoyable film for me. While I am disappointed that Pierce Brosnan is no longer 007, the plotline in this film more than made up for it, and Daniel Craig does a nice job as James Bond, though his light hair did throw me off, for me, James Bond just HAS to have dark hair. But honestly, that's just a minor quibble in what has proven to be a rather entertaining and enjoyable film. There's just enough twists and turns in this film to make it entertaining, and Bond slipping up and the conflict that follows... let's just say that the actress who plays M also did a wonderful job in her role, the only person who could have rivaled her was Merryl Streep. The gambling scenes were also a lot of fun to watch. Kudos on an entertaining James Bond film!
