True Grit (Special Collector's Edition) Review


TRUE GRIT (1969), from the novel by Charles Portis published in 1968, was a paradigm-shift in the way we watch film and the way films are shot. (How I hate the word "paradigm" and the term "shot" in reference to film.) The lush and healthy outdoors locations, Yellowstone National Park among them, and the super-detailed outdoor sets added to the genuine flavor hitherto unrealized in Westerns.

Naturally, the story has that elegant simplicity of the classic: a young teen Arkansas girl from out in the country pursues her father's murderer with the help of a grizzled old marshal. This is Charles Portis we're talking about here, and he is the master of subtle comic writing as well as an ex-Marine from Arkansas. Portis is a writer of orderliness, so aside from the wickedly colorful villain Tom Cheney (ohh, Dick Cheney's grandfather?--here spelled "Chaney", played by bit player Jeff Corey) whom they all are pursuing, there are yin/yang characters.

Into the story steps handsome Texas Ranger La Boeuf (Glenn Campbell, ohhh, Shia's great-grandfather?) who is pursing our ex-vice president's grandpa for the murder of a Texas senator. He throws in with young Mattie (played by the reputedly vicious Kim Darby, an old Disney Studios player). Marshal Ruben "Rooster" Cogburn (John Wayne) is irritated but amused at La Boeuf's presence.

An early and poignant bit part, Moon, is expertly offered by the late and sorely missed Dennis Hopper; Alfred Ryder (as defense attorney Mr. Goudy who has a hilarious courtroom exchange with Rooster), Strother Martin and the incomparable John Fiedler (immortal voice of Piglet) round out the talent on display. I was very taken with Judge Isaac Parker (James Westerfield) and his courtroom; also by his famous black bailiff played by James McEachin. Jay Silverheels and Wilford Brimley make uncredited appearances here too. EVERYBODY was in this!

Portis does not stop there--later in the story comes Lucky Ned Pepper (Robert Duvall), gang leader extraordinaire and Cogburn's old nemesis. The action is unparalleled and does great justice to the novel, with an exception: Mattie is about 14 years old and a 30-year-old Kim Darby was unwisely chosen to play this role. Allegedly, Wayne wanted his then-14-year-old daughter, Ayissa, to have the role. Ayissa was said to have cried for a week when informed that the role had gone to someone else...but Wayne bitched about it for years to come. And it is true that Darby was even-handedly nasty to every single person she encountered. Director Henry Hathaway was less frightened of rattlesnakes, he said, than of Kim Darby's filthy temper.

Hathaway also had a great battle of the wills with Wayne on account of Rooster Cogburn's appearance: Portis modeled Cogburn after President Grover Cleveland, who weighed about 365 LBS. and sported a huge walrus moustache. Cogburn also wore an eyepatch. Wayne was so incensed about the makeup that he refused to wear any at all. It took Hathaway some serious bone-crunching just to get Wayne to agree to the eyepatch. On the bright side, Wayne was told not only to forget about his weight problem but to pack on some extra pounds, so in the end he happily agreed.

The film got Oscars. More importantly, Wayne got his one and only for this role. It is a subtle, hilarious and profound portrayal that some people believe was Wayne lampooning himself. I do not see it that way: John Wayne had a flair for "camera acting" and was well aware of the camera's presence. This, combined with his true talents, make Rooster Cogburn his most unforgettable character of all, and one of the undisputed Western icons. And Wayne was worried all along that audiences wouldn't recognize him!

This film cannot be done any more justice than I did here. It is rich and innovative, inspired by the original novel, and makes all earlier Westerns fall flat. It has inspired and informed every Western that has been made since, and Brendan Gleason's (a/k/a Gleeson) portrayal of Alastair "Mad-eye" Moody in HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE is an obvious homage to Wayne's Cogburn. I've always loved Stephen King films for his highly unusual writing talent and for the way he always delivers unexpected and bizarre twists, but I *completely* forgot how much I love Carrie!

I haven't seen this movie in quite a long time. In fact, it must have been 20 years since I last watched it. I completely forgot what it was about.

Carrie is the name of a teenage girl who has special powers- she has the ability to move objects with her mind. Her character is that she *constantly* gets picked on by all the girls in her gym class. They do some of the most revulting things imaginable to her.

Furthermore, her mother believes she is evil, so she constantly tries to save her daughter whenever the girl returns home from school by reading from the Bible, screaming in her daughters face that she's sinful, and other ways.

Basically, the girl has a bad life, haha. But... what goes around comes around, eh?

The majority of the storyline focuses on the senior prom dance, and what will happen when Carrie gets invited. Well I know one thing- her mother won't be happy about it, haha. This is when Carrie REALLY takes advantage of her special powers. She takes absolutely no crap from anyone, let's put it that way.

There are some unintentionally funny moments throughout the film, such as when the head girl in her gym class gets smacked around by her gym teacher and her boyfriend. It's because she doesn't know when to shut up, haha. She's *always* getting smacked around by someone.

John Travolta... WOW he looks young, haha. With long black hair, too. Surprising to see this. I didn't even recognize him at first.

Another interesting thing about the film is how Carrie becomes close to her gym teacher because she's the only one who understands how much Carrie is being picked on by her classmates. However, it's very surprising what happens to the gym teacher eventually.

Also, try to imagine school teachers acting the way they do in this film THESE days, haha. Hard to imagine.

It's not hard to predict where this sweetly old-fashioned romantic comedy is going to end up, but along the way there are many pleasures to be had. Director Rob Reiner, in his second feature (after This Is Spinal Tap), has a nice eye for the kitschy flotsam found along the American highway, and his identification with the college kids doesn't condescend to them one bit. The movie helped make a star of John Cusack, who gives a delightfully spritzy performance--kind of a precursor to his similarly energetic, likable turn in Say Anything. This is an excellent movie at a great price from amazon.Get it as a Xmas present or to watch with your loved ones.This is a college romance(why don't they make those anymore?) and thus has more depth than the high school romcoms that are either gross or immature.At a New England college we see 2 students in an English Lit. class.He is brash,irreverent,superficial,make-it-up-as-you-go-along guy.She is studious,prim,organised,focussed.You just know that they are made for each other,because each can save the other from their foolishness.The question is will they realise it?A series of disastrous encounters between the 2 reinforces the poor opinion each has of the other during the school term(and there are some great lines to remember).But each is going to L.A. for the Xmas holidays.Cusack to meet every guy's fantasy- a date with a gorgeous California girl,that his best buddy has set him up with and whom is guaranteed to be a "sure thing"!Zuniga is going out to L.A. to see her equally studious boyfriend whom she calls at 7.45pm each night.By accident they find themselves in the same car sharing the trip with 2 others(who are absolutely hilarious simpletons).The 2 spend the whole trip arguing,bickering and annoying each other to the point that they get abandoned in the roadway by the others.And so they decide to hitch/walk to L.A. Along the way they start to discover different facets of the other,that challenge their hitherto first impressions.She can be spontaneous and open minded.He can be gallant and caring.Watch for the scene in the truck driven by a wonderfully sleazy actor (who went on to play the drill sergeant in "full metal jacket")where Cusack basically saves Zuniga from a fate worse than death (as Jane Austen would say).But every time these 2 start to get closer,something prevents them from coming together.My wife shouted at the screen-"Kiss her now you idiot!" twice-once after the beer chugging scene and once after the waking up scene.Anyway,as the trip unfolds,we see Cusack's recurring fantasies about his blonde "sure thing" begin to wobble.Until finally,to his surprise and part horror,his recurring dream about the blonde morphs at the crucial moment into Zuniga which wakes him up with a start.His true feelings about Zuniga are beginning to surface and Reiner handles this beautifully.Watch how her suitcase plays a key role too.Throughout the trip she is lugging this big suitcase with everything you could need as any organised girl would.And he lets her do it.But at a key point,Cusack picks it up for her and says "that's ok I got it".And that's when you know he is hooked.But once more,just as you think they are going to be OK,he manages to screw up when he tells a truck driver who is giving them the final ride to LA that he is going there to meet his sure thing.Zuniga,who doesn't know why he is going to LA as it hasn't come up,wakes up in the back just as Cusack is boasting,and she gets totally upset,but doesn't say anything.
When they get to LA all hell breaks loose.They are totally confused about their feelings for each other,but neither knows how to break the cycle of closeness followed by distrust.She goes to her boyfriend and he goes to meet the blonde at a party.Once with her boyfriend Zuniga realises that she can't stop thinking about Cusack,and misses being with him.So,she talks her boyfriend(who is clearly destined to be ex-boyfriend)into going to the party.There she works hard to get Cusack jealous,and then watches Cusack as he returns the compliment.A big argument ensues with some great lines(from Zuniga-"he thinks love is something you can order out like a pizza!") .They both leave the party separately.She with boyfriend ,he with blonde.
Does she go to bed with her boyfriend?Does he go to bed with the blonde?
We don't know.But the next time we see them,they are in the same english class,where she won't talk to him.And then the English prof reads from the best essay that has been handed in after the xmas vacation.It's called the "sure thing" and it's by Cusack.Zuniga cringes in horror expecting the final humiliation-and a public one at that.But as the essay is read out by the prof to the class ,something happens in the essay that she did not foresee at all.It becomes clear that Cusack understood the difference between the "real thing" (with her)and a "sure thing" (with the gorgeous blonde) and that the "real thing" is what counts.
"You didn't sleep with her?" Zuniga asks filled with surprise/wonder.
